Meet Butch: Knight Transportation Trainer Shaping the Next Generation of Truck Drivers
From Childhood Dream to Professional Truck Driver
Some people choose trucking as a career—others feel called to it. For Knight Transportation trainer Butch W., that calling began in childhood. Growing up in California, Butch watched his uncles build their careers on the road. Their stories of long hauls, big challenges, and the freedom of open highways sparked something in him.
“I always dreamed of becoming a truck driver. Each day, I hit the road with determination, knowing I’m living out a dream I’ve cherished for so long.”
At just 23, Butch earned his Class A license and launched a career that would take him across city streets, rural highways, and everything in between. For 20 years, he drove and managed a large towing company before joining Knight Transportation’s Tulare, CA Terminal more than a decade ago. Four years ago, he moved to Arkansas, where he embraced the state’s warm hospitality and scenic charm—but his dedication to the road never changed.
Becoming a Knight Transportation Trainer
Why Training Was the Next Natural Step
With nearly ten years of training experience under his belt, Butch has mentored more than 100 drivers. Taking on the trainer role was a natural next step for him, an opportunity to give back to an industry that shaped his life.
For Butch, the most fulfilling moments come when a trainee finally grasps a skill they’ve been struggling with.
“Seeing that spark of understanding, that precious light bulb moment, makes every moment worth it,” he shared.
Those breakthroughs—whether in backing, driving straight, or planning a trip—are what keep him energized and committed.

A Training Philosophy Built on Patience and Growth
Creating Confident, Safety-First Drivers
Butch believes that the foundation of good training is patience. Mistakes aren’t cause for criticism, they’re a normal and necessary part of learning.
“Patience is essential in training, as mistakes are a natural part of the learning process,” he explained.
Inside his truck, Butch expects one thing above all else: a willingness to learn. He values trainees who listen, stay engaged, and show a strong work ethic.
“Being willing to listen, learn, and work hard are essential attitudes for growth,” he said.
Butch’s teaching style is straightforward and supportive. He focuses on open communication, clear expectations, and creating a space where trainees feel confident asking questions instead of hiding their uncertainties. His goal is simple: develop safe, skilled, productive drivers who feel genuinely prepared when they upgrade.

Supporting Drivers Beyond the Training Truck
Staying Connected After Drivers Upgrade
One of the things that sets Butch apart is his commitment to supporting trainees beyond their time in his truck. During their first week solo, he checks in multiple times a day. As they settle into their new role, he continues reaching out—daily, then weekly.
“I always make it a point to stay connected with my trainees,” he said. “The meaningful friendships I formed continue to enrich my life.”
Many of his former trainees still call him for advice, guidance, or just to catch up—whether they’ve stayed with Knight or moved on. That long-term support reflects both his leadership and his genuine care for the people he trains.
