Dialogue with a Driver: Willie Holloway’s Journey of Resilience, Service, and Family
From Foster Care to the Open Road: Finding Purpose at Knight Transportation
At Knight Transportation, our drivers are more than the miles they run. They are fathers, mothers, veterans, teammates, leaders – and often, quiet examples of resilience. Our Dialogue with a Driver video series is dedicated to telling those stories, straight from the drivers themselves.
In our latest episode, we’re proud to share the story of Willie Holloway, a driver based out of our Nashville terminal, whose journey to trucking is shaped by perseverance, service, and deep appreciation for family.
Growing Up Without Stability and Finding Strength Anyway
Willie’s early life was anything but easy. Growing up in the foster care system, he and his brothers were separated into different homes, often without the chance to see each other or their mother.
“It was pretty tough,” Willie shares. “Not being able to see my mom or my brothers.”
Books and school became his refuge. Education wasn’t just a requirement; it was a lifeline. Willie took school seriously because he knew it could lead him somewhere better, somewhere stable.
Basketball, Brotherhood, and Belonging
Willie discovered basketball late – his senior year of high school – but once he did, he committed fully. Extra drills. Extra practices. Extra effort. What drew him in wasn’t just the competition; it was the team and family aspect of the game.
“It doesn’t matter where you come from or what walk of life you’re from,” Willie explains. “You meet somebody, and you become friends, brothers.”
That mindset carried him through community college, a scholarship to Thomas University, and eventually a national ranking. But just as importantly, it pulled him out of his shell. By his junior year, Willie was volunteering in local elementary schools, reading to kids and learning what it meant to be a positive role model.

Loss, Military Service, and the Road Back
When Willie lost his mother, the last immediate family member he had, it left him feeling lost. Seeking direction and purpose, he joined the military.
“It was one of the best decisions I ever made,” Willie says. “It helped guide me to the person I am today.”
But transitioning back to civilian life wasn’t easy. Like many veterans, Willie struggled. He chose counseling, an important step that helped him regain his footing and move forward.
An Unexpected Path to Trucking
Believe it or not, Willie’s introduction to trucking started with a video game, American Truck Simulator. What began as curiosity grew into something more: a vision of independence, stability, and the ability to provide for his family.
As he researched trucking companies, Willie paid close attention to benefits, culture, and values. Knight Transportation stood out.
“Knight was the only one that had a military culture that really piqued my interest,” he says.
That sense of mutual respect, drivers acknowledging each other with a simple wave, meant more to Willie than people might realize.
“You never know what someone else is going through. That wave can help a driver make it through the toughest hours of the day.”

Home at the Nashville Terminal
After joining Knight, Willie transferred to our Nashville terminal, a smaller location with a close-knit feel.
“It’s a small terminal,” Willie says, “but the family’s big.”
That culture – being accepted, appreciated, and valued for the work he does – is what Willie says matters most to him.
“My favorite thing about driving for Knight is the family culture more than anything.”
"It's a small terminal, but the family's big."
