A Leadership Team That Understands Drivers

Strong leadership plays a major role in the Portland Terminal’s success. In fact, Terminal Manager Daniel Becker brings a unique perspective to the role.

Before moving into leadership, Daniel spent time behind the wheel as a Knight driver. During that time, he logged nearly 150,000 miles on the road. As a result, he understands the challenges drivers face and the support they need to succeed.

That firsthand experience helps shape how the Portland Terminal operates today. Furthermore, it allows Daniel to build trust with drivers because he has been in their shoes.

Knight Transportation has always been committed to supporting its drivers and employees. Likewise, Daniel has helped foster that mindset throughout the Portland Terminal.

Instead of focusing on individual success, the team works together toward shared goals. Consequently, drivers can expect support from every department throughout their journey with Knight.

A Family-Oriented Culture That Sets Portland Apart

Beyond growth and recruiting success, the Portland Terminal is known for its positive culture.

More importantly, it’s a culture that team members genuinely enjoy being part of. Driver Development Manager Marty Lawlor describes the terminal as low-key, family-oriented, and non-confrontational. Simply put, he believes the approach is working.

That sense of teamwork can be felt throughout the entire office. In addition, employees consistently support one another and focus on doing what’s best for drivers.

DQP Facilitator Richard Zozosky shared a similar perspective on the Portland team culture.

His comments reflect what many people experience when they visit the terminal. Ultimately, the Portland team has created an environment built on respect, collaboration, and strong relationships. That’s a big reason why both drivers and employees continue to thrive.

"In other jobs that I've had, it's like a lot of people don't get along. There's always like that one bad guy in the office. We don't have that here. There's no bad people in our office. It's really amazing and I love working here."

Four Months of Truck Growth and Counting: How Portland Continues to Lead

Since the start of 2026, Portland has increased its seated truck count from 59 to 86 trucks, representing a 45.8% year-to-date increase. Additionally, the terminal has added an average of three seated trucks per month, achieving roughly 4.3% monthly growth.

Each month, Knight Transportation recognizes terminals that excel in truck growth and operating performance. As a result, the Portland Terminal has earned Terminal of the Month for truck Growth for four consecutive months. However, according to Driver Development Manager Marty Lawlor, that success is no accident.

Instead, the Portland team has built its momentum through consistent recruiting efforts and a strong workplace culture. Furthermore, the team is committed to creating an environment where drivers feel supported and valued.

Terminal Manager Daniel Becker and Driver Development Manager Marty Lawlor regularly visit CDL schools throughout the Pacific Northwest. As a result, they have built strong relationships with future drivers and local training programs.

During Driver Appreciation Week, the Portland team took those efforts a step further. They welcomed students from a local CDL school to the terminal and provided lunch for the group. In addition, the visit gave students an opportunity to experience the culture at Knight Transportation firsthand.

More importantly, the event showcased the team’s commitment to recruiting, mentorship, and driver support. Ultimately, it reflects what makes the Portland Terminal special: a team that invests in people and works together to create opportunities for future drivers.
